On September 27, 2024, history was made when the final votes were tallied, and Civic members approved the proposed merger between Civic and Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU.)
Benefits of the merger
Civic and LGFCU are aligned in many areas, including our focus on and deep respect for local government, and our core values.
This merger offers all members a single source for affordable financial products, upgraded technology and more ways to reach us than ever. We’re excited to bring our two great credit unions together to make us better and put us in a strong position to meet your needs now and in the future.
- Expand services — More products, technologies and service options for members.
- Strengthen communities — Unifies our focus on local government and partnerships to serve more members
- Save you money — More competitive rates and a robust ATM network
- Build for the future — More resources as a larger combined credit union, to help you build your financial life
What to expect
The merger represents a big step forward for Civic members.
In addition to the new products we’ve added, we’re opening 11 Civic branches statewide in 2024, have launched our Civic vans, and added a statewide ATM network and thousands of merchant locations across North Carolina for your cash needs.
With the merger, Civic will maintain the deep community partnerships first formed by LGFCU, and these important member-focused designations: Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI); Low-Income Designated Credit Union (LIDCU); and Community Development Credit Union (CDCU).
Each represents our ongoing commitment to expand access to financial services for members with low incomes and communities in underserved areas.
What’s next
This approval means Civic has merged into LGFCU, but Civic will continue to operate under our trade name, Civic Credit Union. Additionally, we will retain existing channels, rate structure and technology.
Over the next few months, we’ll finalize data and system testing, ensuring our technology, products and channels are fine-tuned when LGFCU members move to Civic in June 2025.
Civic has designed member-requested products that encourage you to save, spend and invest the way you want.
Who is Local Government Federal Credit Union?
Local Government Federal Credit Union was chartered in March 1983 to serve North Carolina local government employees and volunteers, elected and appointed officials, and their families. It has more than 400,000 members and assets exceeding $4 billion.
Is either credit union in financial trouble?
No. Consolidating their assets will further strengthen Civic’s financial position for the future and allow us to offer more competitive rates and cost savings.
Will my Civic funds be secure?
The standard share insurance amount is $250,000 per share per owner, per insured credit union, for each account ownership category. After the merger, if you have accounts at both LGFCU and Civic, your Civic accounts will continue to be insured separately from your LGFCU accounts for six months after the date of the merger or, in the case of a share certificate, the earliest maturity date after the six-month period. In the case of a share certificate that matures within the six-month grace period that is renewed at the same dollar amount, either with or without accrued dividends having been added to the principal amount, and for the same term as the original share certificate, the separate insurance applies to the renewed share certificate until the first maturity date after the six-month period. A share certificate that matures within the six-month grace period that is renewed on any other basis, or that is not renewed, is separately insured only until the end of the six-month grace period. You can find answers to other share insurance questions on the NCUA’s website.
Will the credit union’s name change after the merger?
We will go by our trade name, Civic Credit Union. Our legal name will be Local Government Federal Credit Union until our independence from SECU on June 2, 2025. Upon independence, our legal name will become Civic Federal Credit Union.
Will my account or routing numbers change?
Civic account and routing numbers will stay the same. You will be notified of any changes or actions needed before the conversion on June 2, 2025.
I have accounts at both Civic and LGFCU. What happens next?
Your LGFCU account(s) will transfer to Civic on June 2, 2025, and be serviced by Civic as the continuing credit union.
Will my Civic banking options change?
No. You will continue to use the Civic app and online banking as you do now, along with our new branches and statewide ATM networks. LGFCU members can begin using Civic services on June 2, 2025.
